Breaking the Design Barrier

This presentation traces the evolution of the design, analysis and manufacturing paradigm from the days of the Wright Brother Flyer to present high performance military and civilian aircraft.  Advanced software and manufacturing capability now allow breakthrough structural configuration that could not be built before.  Use of Optimization tools early in the design process requires a change in philosophy that we are exploring at Boeing.  These changes are being reflected in everything from redesign of traditional aircraft like the CH-47 Chinook to the newest 787.
