Introduction to Automotive Torque Converters
The torque converter is a critical component in a vehicle powertrain with an automatic transmission. It is a starting device that multiplies engine torque to overcome the poor low speed torque characteristics of an internal combustion engine. The converter is a turbomachine, and as such, is a fluid link between the engine and transmission gears. It allows the engine to run when the vehicle is not moving, and smoothly regulates engine speed during vehicle acceleration. The presentation will contain an overview of the nature and purpose of the torque converter along with the fundamental principles of converter operation. Performance tests, common performance parameters, and basic component design influences will also be described.
Refreshments will be served.
