In 2007 the first Iowa State team participated in the CanSat competition. The mission was to design and construct a satellite that would be deployed at an altitude of 760 meters. The CanSat was to be approximately the size of a twenty-ounce bottle and weigh no more than one pound; once deployed from the rocket the CanSat took temperature, pressure, and humidity data as well as a video of the descent. With these restrictions the 2007 team created a CanSat system with a unique recovery system that placed sixth in tough competition. Currently aerospace engineering students are forming a new team to compete in the 2008 CanSat competition next summer.
