Development and Assessment of Analysis Tools for Examination of Microscopic

Award Amount:

Award Period Date:

January 1, 2016-December 31, 2017

Current Status:

The proposed is to develop methodologies for analysis and examinations of the microscopic features of fractured surface for comparative analysis of forensic evidence. The two-year project will feature two phases of work. The first phase will be to develop the mathematical and algorithm framework and apply it to different types of steel while identifying key variables and probability distributions. The second phase will be to examine the topology of fracture surfaces exposed to the degrading effects of humidity and pH-levels. This will help Bastawros understand the the applicability of the technique to weathered specimens.

The research will give the NIJ the knowledge to assist forensic scientists working in a forensic laboratory.
