The SPACE Lab visits SALIN247 Industry partners

We’re excited to be collaborating on a joint project with Salin247 focused on improving how autonomous off-road vehicles make decisions and adapt to challenging environments.
This collaboration is possible thanks to the Digital and Precision Agriculture Research and Innovation Platform, for facilitating this collaboration and securing the project funding

Batu Candan awarded The Student Travel Award

PhD candidate Batu Candan got awarded the AFSOR sponsored The Student Travel Award at the recent 2025 AAS/AIAA Astrodynamics Specialist Conference for the paper “Adaptive Relative Pose Estimation Framework with Dual Noise Tuning for Safe Approaching Maneuvers” B. Candan and S. Servadio

SPACE Lab partecipation at the 2025 AAS/AIAA Astrodynamics Specialist Conference

The SPACE Lab presented 8 papers at the 2025 AAS/AIAA Astrodynamics Specialist Conference, held in Boston August 9th-14th. Six students presented their work, showing the progress that is happening in the lab: (from the left) Yacob Medhin, David Knapick, Batu Candan, Simone Servadio (PI), Mohammed Atallah, Erin Ashley, and Ridma Ganganath.

Best Paper Award 1st Runner Up Fusion 2025

Dr. Servadio‘s paper “Dynamical Update Maps for Particle Flow with Differential Algebra,” was awarded Best Paper 1st Runner Up Award at the 28th International Conference of Information Fusion in Rio De Janeiro.

The paper is available online here, and a journal version has been submitted for review in TAES.

NASA Program Officer Visits SPACE Lab.

NASA EPSCoR Program Office Travis Blake visited the SPACE Lab on Thursday April 24th, overseeing the work the Lab is doing on Space Domain Awareness (SDA).

Strong SPACE Lab presence at the Iowa Space Grant Consortium Spring Research Symposium

Four SPACE Lab students attended the NASA EPSCoR and Iowa Space Grant Consortium (ISGC) Spring Research Symposium  on April 15th in HOWE hall, representing the work done by the SPACE Lab and funded by NASA EPSCoR grants.

Their posters are titled:

  • “Robust TRIAD-Based Attitude Estimation for CubeSats: A Multiplicative EKF Framework” R. Ganganath, and S. Servadio
  • “Creating Satellite Population Models With SINDy”, M. McCarthy, and S. Servadio
  • Development of Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) Recurrent Neural Network for Low Earth Orbit Capacity Analysis,” B. Stock, and S. Servadio.
  • Estimation of Dynamic Parameters In LEO Space Enviroment Models,” E. Ashley, and S. Servadio.

Best Paper Award 3rd place at Fusion 2024

Dr. Servadio‘s paper “Propagation of Uncertainty with the Koopman Operator,” in collaboration with MIT authors, was awarded Best Paper 3rd Place Award at the 27th International Conference of Information Fusion in Venice out of more than 600 papers.

Graduate Student wins TEX Summer 2024

Erin Ashley was awarded the Teaching Excellence (TEX) Award for Summer 2024 at ISU. The purpose of these awards is to recognize and encourage outstanding teaching achievement by graduate students. The intent is to recognize up to 10% of the graduate students involved in teaching each year.

In his recommendation, Dr. Servadio recognized Erin’s outstanding contributions to teaching in the Aerospace Engineering department. He highlighted the great feedback from the students and Erin’s ability to encourage undergraduate students to develop the researcher mindset. Here is the story.

Awarded NASA Orbital Debris and Space Sustainability Grant

The SPACE Lab was awarded, as a subcontractor, the “NASA Sponsors New Research on Orbital Debris, Lunar Sustainability” on the project “Avoiding the Kessler Syndrome through policy intervention” from NASA Office of Technology, Policy & Strategy. The SPACE lab will be working alongside the MIT lead and their faculty members. Here is the story.

Awarded NASA Rapid Research Response R3 Grant on Space Domain Awareness

The SPACE Lab was awarded the NASA EPSCoR 2024 Rapid Response Research national grant for his project proposal, “Parameters Estimation for Informed Orbit Capacity Models, STMD.” The whole story is available here.

2024 National Conference on Undergraduate Research

Two SPACE Lab members won the NCUR video award. Jonak Bhagawati and Sushant Chiramana presented a poster titled “Development of a Temporal Space Debris Population Calculator,” awarded best research video at 2024 National Conference on Undergraduate Research, April 8-10, Long Beach, CA
